Anil Kumble was born on 17th October 1970 in Bangalore, Karnataka. His parents K N Krishna Swamy and Saroja took the family name from a village situated in Kasargod district of Kerala. Even though of Kannadiga origin, his grandfather hailed from this village. Kumble completed mechanical engineering at R.V. College of Engineering. However very soon he realized that his real talent lies in some other field.
Anil Kumble started his career as a medium pace bowler. He made his test debut in 1990 on India's tour of England. His debut ODI match was against Sri Lanka at Sharjah in the Australasia Cup on April 25, 1990. In 1992, he established himself as a quality international spinner by taking 8 wickets in the second test during India's tour in South Africa.
